In this article, we talk about how the cable tie came into existence and it’s development into the nylon PA66 version we see in the market today.

The cable tie was first developed by Mr. Maurus C. Logan of the company Thomas & Betts in the year 1958. It was during his visit to a Boeing air plane manufacturing facility in 1956. Airplane wiring was a cumbersome and detailed process, involving hundreds of feet of wire organised on sheets of 50 feet long plywood boards and held in place with tied up, wax-coated and braided nylon cords. Each knot had to be pulled tight by wrapping the nylon wire around one’s finger, which sometimes cut the operator’s fingers until they developed thick calluses or “hamburger hands.” Logan was convinced there had to be an easier, more convenient way to accomplish this critical task.

Within 2 years, he came up with a prototype of the modern cable tie and submitted a patent. The original version included a “metal tooth” inside the “head” of the cable tie. It became hugely popular across industries owing to its ease of use and low cost and was widely accepted in all sectors that required wire binding and organization in some form or the other.

Over time, cable ties are now beginning to be used in developing countries like India as well, as we begin to realize it’s cost effectiveness in getting work done rapidly. As manual labour become increasingly expensive, cable ties become increasingly necessary in order to save time needed in application of cable binders.

“Tycab” cable ties, manufactured by Blackburn Industries Kolkata is well known in the country for it’s great tensile strength, longevity and amazing cost effectiveness. Blackburn is one of India’s most reliable manufacturers and suppliers of nylon cable ties.
